Senior citizen hurt in Putatan house fire

KOTA KINABALU: A man was injured while escaping from a burning house in Kampung Dumpil, Putatan, on Thursday (June 12) night.

The 66-year-old man, who lived alone, suffered burns on the soles of his feet while fleeing the blaze, which destroyed two wooden houses.

Putatan fire station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said the fire broke out at around 9.30pm and razed the man's rented house as well as a larger house nearby that was occupied by nine people.

All nine escaped unhurt, she said when contacted on Friday (June 13).

Firefighters arrived at the scene, which is 2km from the station, within minutes of receiving the emergency call.

“Two non-permanent structures were involved.

“The injured man was given initial treatment by our team before being handed over to medical personnel for further care in the hospital,” Noor Sherriyana added.

A total of 21 firefighters from the Putatan, Kota Kinabalu and Penampang stations were involved in the operation along with police, ambulance services, and Sabah Electricity personnel.

The fire was brought under control at 9.52pm and prevented from spreading.

Noor Sherriyana said investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the losses.
