GERIK: Police will set up a special task force to investigate the road accident involving a bus ferrying 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and a multipurpose vehicle (MPV).
Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the team would work closely with technical experts from several agencies, including the Road Transport Department, Land Public Transport Agency, Puspakom, the Health Ministry and Public Works Department.
“We will form a special technical team to assist in the probe and complete the investigation paper as quickly as possible,” he said to the press at Gerik Hospital.
He urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.
“If you have any information, please report it directly to the police or relevant authorities. Do not spread it on social media as this could cause confusion and interfere with our probe,” he added.
When asked whether the bus driver had any previous traffic offences on his record, he said that investigations are still in the early stages.
“We will examine all aspects, the driver’s record, background, past activities and employment history.
“The team will also obtain relevant reports on the bus, including its condition and maintenance records,” he added.
Mohd Yusri also reminded road users to be extra cautious, especially when travelling during festive periods.
A total of 15 students were killed and 27 others injured in the tragedy.
Thirteen died at the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The 40-year-old bus driver and his 54-year-old co-driver were among those injured.
The accident happened between 12.30am and 1am yesterday when the chartered bus travelling from Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak, rammed into the rear of the MPV.
