IPOH: With growing concerns over microplastics contamination, more are becoming cautious about their food and how they store it.
Intern S. Sarviny, 23, said she was becoming mindful of her food intake due to contamination especially in seafood.
“I try to consume less seafood due to the microplastics issue. One can consume seafood but not in large quantities, and eat it only occasionally to prevent negative effects on the body.
“I also bring food from home, packing them in glass containers and using stainless steel utensils,” she said.
Sarviny said many could be unaware of the dangers of microplastics to their health.
“There needs to be more awareness on this issue, not just about the dangers but also practical ways to reduce exposure, such as avoiding plastic use and maintaining a proper diet,” she added.
Account assistant Nur Asmira Zulkafli, 32, said people should avoid using plastic-based material to pack food.
“Unfortunately, when you pack food from outside, you often have to rely on plastic bags, containers and utensils that hawkers or restaurants provide.
“The best option is to bring your own glassware when taking away food,” she said.
She also suggested that people consume more rich antioxidant items to help detoxify.
IT engineer K. Divyen, 40, said he avoided using plastic containers for hot or oily food.
“When I eat at home, I use glass or stainless steel materials and bring my own glass containers or paper lunchbox when I pack food from outside.
“I also drink filtered water. When I go to work, I bring my own stainless steel water bottle from home,” he added.
He eats eggplant dishes and dragon fruit weekly.
