Penang couple suspected of abusing 12yo daughter remanded four days

BALIK PULAU: A married couple arrested for allegedly abusing their 12-year-old daughter has been remanded for four days.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the 47-year-old father of the victim was remanded from Wednesday to Saturday (May 21 to 24) while the man's wife was remanded from Thursday to Sunday (May 22 to 25).

ACP Sazalee said police received a report from the principal of the Year Six pupil's school on Tuesday (May 20) and subsequently detained the couple.

"The incident came to light after the school counsellor noticed that the victim appeared to be in pain," he said here on Friday (May 23).

ACP Sazalee said the counsellor interviewed and examined the victim, finding injuries on the child's back.

The counsellor then informed the principal, who lodged the report.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, ACP Sazalee added.
