Collision with lorry kills biker, granddaughter in Sibu

SIBU: An 80-year-old motorcyclist was killed alongside his six-year-old granddaughter after they collided with a lorry on Jalan Sibujaya-Salim on Monday (May 5).

The incident occurred at about 11.20am when the pair, from Rumah Grace Itun, Sungai Salim, were on their way home after the man had picked the girl up from school.

According to Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili, preliminary investigations suggest the motorcycle suddenly emerged from a junction, leaving the lorry driver unable to avoid a collision.

Both victims were thrown off and became trapped beneath the lorry, suffering severe injuries.

"The elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the girl succumbed to her injuries shortly after at the hospital," ACP Zulkipli said.

The 49-year-old lorry driver, who was uninjured, has been detained to assist with the investigation.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he added.
