Lorry driver, attendant nabbed after testing positive for drugs during Melaka JPJ ops

MELAKA: A lorry driver and his attendant were detained by the authorities after testing positive for drugs during a special operation against overloaded vehicles across the state.

Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim said urine screening results revealed that the driver, in his 40s and the attendant, in his 20s, tested positive for methamphetamine.

He said both men were subsequently handed over to the state National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) for further action.

"This integrated operation, which began at 10pm on April 25, ended at 9am today (May 1) and involved the inspection of 89 vehicles with 21 were ordered to be weighed and 19 were found to be overloaded.

"A total of 43 notices were issued for various offences,” he said on Thursday (May 1)

He added that one lorry failed to be present for weighing and would be issued a notice under Section 63(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which will be delivered to the driver by registered postal service.

“Transport companies, vehicle owners, and drivers are reminded to always comply with the regulations to ensure a safe road ecosystem for all road users,” he said.
