PETALING JAYA: Thousands of Christians nationwide thronged churches for Maundy Thursday, which marks the start of the Paschal Triduum.

At the Church of St Francis Xavier here, crowds began building up as early as 3pm yesterday ahead of the mass, which began at 4pm.

Many also took to sitting outside the church to follow the mass despite the sweltering heat.

During the mass, the priest also washed the feet of 12 members of the congregation, re-enacting how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet on the night before being crucified.

Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. It is the start of the Paschal Triduum, a three-day period followed by Good Friday and then Easter. It recalls the passion, death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

A parishioner, who wanted to be known only as John, said he always makes time to attend the Paschal Triduum masses and services.

“It’s an important time for Catholics and my family members try our best to observe this,” said the 33-year-old, who came with his parents and siblings.

For sales executive Aaron Xavier, attending the Paschal Triduum is a non-negotiable annual affair for him and his family.

“Due to my work schedule, it can be challenging to attend church together with my family members.

“Regardless, I will still find time to attend on my own,” said the 28-year-old, who is a parishioner at the Church of the Assumption.

This year will also be more special for Xavier, who will be a lector during the Easter vigil.

“I have previously served as lector during Holy Week masses and also during Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday masses in previous years,” he said.

Good Friday will be observed by Christians today, followed by Easter on Sunday.
