Rubbish sent to Melaka landfill up by 3.54% during Ramadan this year


MELAKA: The total solid waste disposed of at the Sungai Udang Sanitary Landfill here showed an increase of 3.54% to 32,343 tonnes during Ramadan in 2025 compared to 31,199 tonnes during the previous year's festivity.

Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Nor Zaki Md Nor said of the total, 16,660 tonnes were domestic waste, bulk waste amounted to 2,647 tonnes while commercial, industrial and institutional (ICI) waste was 8,325 tonnes.

"Domestic waste rose to 16,660 tonnes during Ramadan compared to 15,672 tonnes last year.

"Bulk waste also increased to 2,647 tonnes during Ramadan, compared to 2,424 tonnes last year, while ICI waste dropped to 8,325 tonnes this year compared to 8,556 tonnes last year," he said in a statement on Friday (April 11).

He said on average, 1,115 tonnes of solid waste were disposed of at the landfill site daily this year, compared to 1,039 tonnes in Ramadan 2024.

He attributed this year's increase in solid waste at the landfill to Ramadan bazaars. - Bernama
