MELAKA: The Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh imposed a fine of RM3,500 on a 27-year-old trader for assaulting a motorist with a motorcycle helmet.
Magistrate N. Sivashangari meted out the sentence after Muhammad Ariff Izzat Shahrudin entered a guilty plea yesterday.
According to the charge sheet, he struck the 52-year-old motorist with a helmet, causing injuries to the victim during the incident in Jalan Cheng Utama, here on March 27.
The offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping or any combination of the two, upon conviction.
Earlier, Muhammad Ariff, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing financial burdens, including supporting his family and debts related to his business.
Prosecuting officer Insp T. Veramuthu requested an appropriate punishment, stating that the incident had gained widespread public attention after going viral on social media.
The court imposed a fine of RM3,500, in default six months’ jail.
On March 29, media reported that the trader was arrested for assaulting a man with a helmet, causing him to collapse.
Melaka Central OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit was quoted as saying that police became aware of the incident through a 17-second viral video clip on Facebook.
The altercation is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding, which escalated into a physical confrontation between the suspect and the victim.
