KOTA KINABALU: Iris Sofea Irfin, a 17-year-old with a deep love for the ocean, has voiced her concerns about marine pollution in her article, "Our Ocean in Agony," which won the Best Article award in the February 2025 edition of E-Magz.
The publication by the Indonesian Teachers Association of Pacitan Teachers Training and Education College recognised Iris's heartfelt piece, which highlights the impact of plastic waste on the ocean.
"The ocean has always been a treasure trove I hold dear," said Iris, reflecting on the pollution she witnesses, including plastic bottles and straws.
Despite the grim depiction, Iris remains hopeful that increased awareness and small changes, like reducing single-use plastics, can reverse the damage.
Iris was among six students from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) who published articles in the regional English-language magazine focused on Waste Awareness Day.
The other contributing students were 17-year-old Rosselina Senora Ungkak, Jescyleo Jesimon and Jason Robert Sopining, both 18, Nur Qamariah Hasmeddy, 19, and Siti Nur Hanisah Omar Hashim, 20.
The students, from diverse vocational programs, advocated for collective action to tackle waste and promote sustainability.
KVC director Lumang Lang praised the students' achievements, emphasising the importance of education and youth engagement in global environmental issues.
He noted that the students' articles reflect their proficiency in English and their ability to address critical environmental challenges.
"This practice of writing and publishing allows students to share opinions and improve language skills," Lumang said, hoping their success inspires others.
