Cops seek info on fatal hit-and-run involving accident victims near Menora Tunnel

IPOH: The police urge anyone with information on the driver of a red four-wheel drive seen running over a woman involved in an accident on KM264.7 of the north-south expressway to come forward.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the initial accident occurred southbound on the expressway near Menora Tunnel here at about 6.30pm on March 30.

He said initial investigations found that a car driven by a 29-year-old man was believed to have lost control before crashing into a road divider and veering into a drain.

“As a result of the accident, a 25-year-old female passenger sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead in the ICU ward of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun the next day (March 31).

“A two-year-old girl also perished at the scene due to head injuries. The car driver sustained injuries to the face and right hand and is currently receiving treatment.

“However the police came across a viral video on social media showing a red four-wheel drive running over one of the victims and fleeing the scene,” he said in a statement Thursday (April 3).

ACP Abang Zainal Abidin said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged all drivers to be more cautious and responsible on the road to prevent unwanted incidents.

“I also want to advise all road users to always drive carefully, especially on slippery and winding roads.

“Ensure your vehicle is in good condition before starting your journey and always use seat belts and child safety seats to minimise the risk of injury in an accident,” he added.

He said anyone with information regarding this case, including dashcam recordings that could assist in the investigation, to contact the investigating officer Insp Mohamad Faiz Abdul Khalim at 018-372 8477.
