Malaysia aims to become green-based technology hub

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to become the centre of green-based technology and product innovation through the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia 2025 (IGEM 2025) later this year.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that the much anticipated 16th IGEM will be held for three days from Oct 15 to Oct 17 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Themed “Race Towards Net Zero: Inclusivity and Sustainability”, Nik Nazmi said this year’s event aims to generate RM5.5bil in business leads for Malaysian businesses through 500 exhibition booths by 250 exhibitors.

He also said this year's IGEM is set to welcome over 50,000 participants from over 50 countries, including China, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Thailand.

To help better facilitate more sales and discussions, Nik also announced that a new event, the Kuala Lumpur Sustainability Summit (KLSS), will be held concurrently at KLCC from October 14 to October 16.

He said KLLS will serve as an international platform that brings together green thought leaders to exchange insights and experiences on climate change and sustainability.

“Sustainability is no longer an option but an urgent necessity, and our actions today will shape the future we leave for future generations,” he said in his speech at IGEM soft launch here on Thursday (March 27).

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid also had similar hopes of increasing IGEM’s role in regional green development.

“IGEM’s investment leads have steadily increased from RM3.08bil in 2020 to RM6.3bil in 2024, which demonstrates the increasing confidence in Malaysia’s green economy,” he said.
