JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested 28 individuals in a statewide crackdown on illegal street racing, which ran for two consecutive weeks from March 10 to 24.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the operation, known as Ops Samseng Jalanan, was conducted simultaneously across all districts under the state contingent’s jurisdiction.
“The suspects, aged between 14 and 36 years old, are being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“If convicted, they face a maximum fine of RM15,000, up to five years in prison, and a five-year licence suspension,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (March 25).
Comm Kumar added that during the operation, a total of 291 motorcycles were seized under Section 64(1) of the same Act.
Additionally, police issued 2,768 summonses for various traffic offences. The highest number of offences was for driving without a valid licence, which accounted for 1,516 summonses.
“This was followed by 643 summonses for non-compliant vehicle registration plates and 317 summonses for non-standard exhaust modifications,” he added.
Comm Kumar said the operation would continue to raise awareness and educate road users on adhering to traffic laws.
“Johor police will not compromise with any individuals who blatantly flout existing rules and regulations,” he said.
