MELAKA: Pollution in Sungai Lereh has reached an alarming level, with 11 complaints filed with Datuk Lim Ban Hong over the past five months.
Lim said the issue, which affects people in his Klebang constituency, has been ongoing for some time and continues to threaten the environment and livelihoods of local fishermen.
“This number (of complaints reported) doesn’t include similar reports from the previous years, further emphasising the severity and persistence of the problem,” he said after a meeting with various authorities, including the Environment Department (DOE) yesterday.
Lim, who is also state MCA chairman, said the pollution is a serious concern and DOE is actively pursuing punitive measures against those responsible.
However, he refrained from making any premature conclusions about the exact cause of the issue, noting that investigations and legal actions are still underway.
“Each time pollution occurs, the water becomes murky, making it difficult for fishermen to sustain their livelihood,” he said.
Lim said authorities have recognised the need for a comprehensive and long-term solution.
“We have coordinated efforts among various stakeholders to curb further damage and prevent future incidents,” he added.
