Asean should act as bridge to handle US tariff hikes, says MCA

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia, which is the Asean Chair for 2025, should play a leadership role in ensuring regional economic stability amid global uncertainties, says MCA.

The party said US President Donald Trump's latest decision to impose additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico would have far-reaching consequences for global trade.

"With Asean now the world's largest free trade area, the region is well-positioned to act as a bridge for trade dialogues, mitigating tensions and ensuring supply chain resilience," MCA international affairs and party diplomacy bureau head Datuk Nicole Wong said in a statement on Thursday (March 6).

"By leveraging its bilateral and multilateral trade networks, Malaysia can foster cooperation with China, the United States and other major economies to minimise the impact of unilateral policies," she said.

Wong urged both the United States and China to prioritise dialogue over confrontation and cooperation over unilateral action.

"Asean, as a key player in global trade, must take proactive steps to maintain trade stability and sustainability, thus ensuring continued economic momentum in the region despite global trade tensions," she said.
