KUALA PILAH: A 47kg black panther that has been rattling the villagers of Kampung Tumang, Johol, for the past three years has been captured.
Negri Sembilan Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Faizal Izham Pikri said efforts to capture the animal had been ongoing for the past three years following complaints about its presence.
It was finally captured yesterday at about 9am after entering one of the traps that was set for it.
“Perhilitan staff found a male black panther, weighing 47.5kg, in the trap. A veterinarian from Perhilitan confirmed that the panther had injuries on its face and neck,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Previously, three different panther traps had been set up at various locations near where the panther had been seen but it did not take the bait.
Faizal said footage from cameras around the traps showed the animal had tried to enter but couldn’t fit due to its large size.
“So, we set up a tiger trap using live goat as bait instead and the animal finally entered it after three years.” .
He said panther would be treated at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre before being released.
