Ramadan: Muslims nationwide perform first terawih prayers

KUALA LUMPUR: The exaltation of welcoming Ramadan 1446H begins to be felt as Muslims in Malaysia congregated for spiritual reflection at mosques to perform the first congregational terawih prayer on Saturday (March 1) night before starting their fast the next day.

In SELANGOR, not only the interior of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque (MSSAAS), which can accommodate up to 24,000 Muslim brethren (Umat), but also the road leading to it was chocked with vehicles.

Bernama's checks at the state mosque found that some vehicles were parked outside the mosque premises due to car park being filled to the brim. The mosque management also took the initiative to provide buggy shuttle services for the faithful in attendance.

In TERENGGANU, it was estimated that around 2,000 worshippers congregated at Abidin Mosque in Kuala Terengganu to perform the terawih prayers led by Sheikh Mohamed Abdul Hamed Kulaib, a distinguished imam specially flown in from Egypt.

It was the same situation in KELANTAN at the Sultan Mansur Mosque near Jalan Kampung Sireh, Kota Bharu; in JOHOR at Sultan Ismail Mosque in Batu Pahat; in PENANG at Saidina Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Mosque in Bukit Mertajam; and in KEDAH at masijid Zahir Mosque, with worshippers filling the mosques and spaces available to perform the prayers ‘exclusive’ to Tarawih, aiming to complete the entire Holy al-Quran by the end of Ramadan to bring immense reward and blessings, that can only be held during this blessed month for Muslims.

In SARAWAK, a check at the state Jamek Mosque in Kuching found approximately 3,000 worshippers from around the city attending the terawih prayers, despite the drizzling rain since the afternoon.

The same religious atmosphere was felt in SABAH at Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, with more than 1,000 worshippers filling the mosque to perform the prayers led by the mosque's Chief Imam, Mohd Zamzuhardi Zakaria Al-Hafiz.- Bernama
