Transport Ministry steps in to resolve stranded vehicles at Port Klang


KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry will facilitate the resolution regarding almost 1,000 vehicles that are stranded at Port Klang after a cargo ship carrying them caught fire last December, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said he had received requests from the affected car owners to help resolve the issue after months of unsuccessful negotiations between them and shipping agents.

Loke said the ministry had met with all stakeholders involved in the issue at the ministry’s office in Putrajaya on Monday (Feb 24).

“We are now mediating the issue to get a solution from the ship owners to release the cars.

“We will try our best to negotiate a more reasonable sum for the car owners to pay to reclaim their cars from the ship,” he said in a press conference after launching an E-Licensing platform for aviation personnel here on Tuesday (Feb 25).

This comes after the car owners were reportedly asked to pay 60% of their car's value to the shipping company to reclaim their cars from the cargo ship, on Feb 18.

The ship remains stranded at Port Klang, after a fire occurred during the vessel’s journey to Borneo, at about 9.1 nautical miles off Tanjung Labuh, Batu Pahat, prompting the ship to return to Port Klang.
