Sanusi freed of sedition charge

SHAH ALAM: The High Court here freed Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (pic) of a sedition charge over his remarks about the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah two years ago.

Justice Aslam Zainuddin ordered Muhammad  Sanusi to be freed over the prosecution’s request for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal after lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud objected to it.

“When the prosecution has expressed its intention not to proceed with the charges, it means that the case is stopped. So if the intention is to stop, then I request that my client be acquitted and discharged,” said Awang Armadajaya.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud informed the court that the prosecution, having received representation from Muhammad Sanusi’s lawyer, did not intend to pursue charges against Muhammad Sanusi and withdrew the charges, Bernama reported.

The case was fixed for hearing yesterday.

On Dec 10 last year, Justice Aslam acquitted and discharged Muhammad Sanusi of a sedition charge over remarks about the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

On July 18, 2023, Muhammad Sanusi pleaded not guilty at the Selayang Sessions Court to two sedition charges over remarks about the Selangor Mentri Besar’s appointment and the formation of a unity government during a political speech in Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara – Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, near here, at 11pm on July 11, 2023.

The case was transferred to the Shah Alam Court for hearing.
