24,000 tonnes of subsidised local rice available from March 1

PUTRAJAYA: There will be 2.4 million 10kg bags of subsidised local rice available in the market from March 1, targeted at poor and hard-core poor households.

Agriculture and Food Security Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Mohd said this marks the start of the government's RM150mil targeted subsidy program to ensure affordable local rice for the targeted groups.

He said that these bags will be tagged and tracked to ensure only targeted households purchase the rice.

"We will launch a special sale of 10,000 bags of 10kg of the subsidised local white rice, priced at RM26, in Kedah at a Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) event this Feb 27," said Badrul Hisham.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is also expected to launch a RM1bil project to boost padi production at the event.
