Over 80% paid their taxes, says LHDN

JOHOR BARU: More than 80% of active taxpayers, comprising individuals and companies, have been adhering to their tax payment obligations to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN).

LHDN chief executive officer Datuk Abu Tariq Jamaluddin said that the board will continue to improve tax compliance through its campaign and operations.

“Overall, we are pleased that a large number of taxpayers contribute to national tax revenue.

“However, for those who have yet to fulfil their obligations, we will continue to engage with them, providing explanations and raising awareness of their responsibility to the country,” he said.

He said this during a press conference after the launching ceremony of the tax compliance operation dubbed ‘Ops Dagang’, at Menara Hasil here on Monday (Feb 24).

He added that LHDN has recorded a tax collection of RM183.4bil in 2023. However, the official revenue figures for 2024 will be announced later by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He also shared that LHDN has also targetted to generate around RM200bil in tax collections this year, depending on its findings.

“This initiative contributes directly to tax collection and has a ripple effect, encouraging broader tax compliance. While we acknowledge the limitations in our resources, we hope this operation will lead to a greater number of taxpayers fulfilling their obligations,” he said.

He added that the Ops Dagang operation is a continuation of last year’s compliance efforts, which saw 10 operations conducted. LHDN aims to maintain this momentum in 2024 to ensure consistent adherence to tax regulations.
