KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 141 police reports have been lodged against a travel agency, involving alleged dubious umrah packages and losses of around RM3mil.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the police are investigating under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Some reports have been referred to the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry (Motac) as the company is registered with them.
"The company is registered and licensed by Motac to conduct Umrah activities from 2023 until 2027, so some police reports were referred to the ministry," he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 16).
"They are responsible for taking action under the Tourism Industry Act 1992," he added.
Comm Ramli said that the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code is still ongoing, despite some cases being referred to Motac.
"We are aware that some activists have suggested no investigations were conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code."
"Not only was such a statement untrue, it was also irresponsible and gave a bad impression of the police," he said.
Comm Ramli said the nation's laws provide investigative jurisdictions to different agencies.
"Thus, offenders under certain laws must be investigated by the relevant agencies so that appropriate action is taken," he added.
