Syed Mokhtar channels RM30mil in aid for farmers


PETALING JAYA: An additional RM30mil in aid has been secured for padi farmers in need from tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, the Prime Minister revealed.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) said the philanthropic gesture came about after he spoke to Syed Mokhtar on supporting the government’s latest efforts to help the farmers.

“I contacted Syed Mokhtar and he has agreed to allocate an additional RM30mil to support the government’s efforts to help poor padi farmers. The government will distribute this allocation directly to the farmers in the near future,” he said in a statement across his social media platforms yesterday.Anwar also expressed his appreciation to Bernas (Padiberas Nasional Bhd), which channelled RM60mil together with the government to padi farmers.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu announced yesterday that the padi floor price would be adjusted from RM1,300 per tonne to RM1,500 per tonne starting Feb 16.
