Probed over false posts about King

PETALING JAYA: Six people are under investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly uploading false and offensive content related to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and the Conference of Rulers on Facebook.

An operation was conducted yesterday involving one of the suspects in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, where a smartphone and a SIM card were seized.

“A forensic analysis will be carried out to obtain evidence,” said the commission in a statement

It added that one case will be investigated in collaboration with the police’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit, with the suspect set to have their statement recorded today.

MCMC said the inspections on other cases will be conducted throughout the week on suspects around Sungai Petani, Kota Baru, Kerian and Teluk Intan.

“Earlier, two notices were issued by MCMC for two suspects for their testimonies and a comprehensive investigation will be made and the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further decision,” the statement said.

The investigation is being carried out under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which provides for a maximum punishment of RM50,000 or a year’s jail or both.
