Public bravery leads to arrest of alleged predator

NILAI: Prompt action by passers-by led to the arrest of a male suspect allegedly involved in outraging the modesty of a woman at the Seremban R&R along the North South Expressway.

Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said the incident happened just past midnight yesterday at the southbound R&R.

“We received a call from the public regarding a citizen’s arrest.

“The suspect, who is in his 20s, was handed over to my team,” he said in a statement.

Supt Abdul Malik said the woman was also in her 20s.

He said background checks on the suspect revealed that he had two previous criminal offences.

The case, he said, is being probed under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a person, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two of these punishments upon conviction.

Supt Abdul Malik urged eyewitnesses to call the Nilai station at 06-790 4222.

Meanwhile, a man and his girlfriend were charged in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court with the murder of his mother last month.

Both accused were jointly charged over the death of JP Virginie, 60, at a house in Bagan Ajam, Butterworth, on Jan 31 this year, Bernama reported.

If guilty, they face the death penalty or imprisonment between 30 to 40 years.
