PETALING JAYA: Receiving the Freedom of the City of London felt almost surreal for Choi Ching Jack, a 25-year-old trainee solicitor in London, who described the ceremony as a "dreamlike" experience.

Held at the Chamberlain’s Court in Guildhall on Friday (Feb 7), the ceremony marked a significant milestone in Choi’s journey, recognising his voluntary contributions to the Malaysian diaspora through organisations such as the British Malaysian Society and the Malaysian Lawyers UK Network.

"Upon receiving the award, I simultaneously felt one step closer to the traditions of the City of London and my cultural roots.

“I am deeply grateful to those who have supported me throughout my professional journey, especially my mentors, many of whom were present at the ceremony,” he told TheStar.

The Freedom of the City of London, with its traditions dating back to 1237, has been awarded to other prominent Malaysians, including Malaysia's first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1968 and acclaimed shoe designer, Datuk Jimmy Choo, in 2006.

Originally from Selangor, Choi moved to the UK to pursue his masters and undergraduate degree at Oxford University and University College London, respectively, where he left an indelible mark through his leadership and academic achievements.

“I hope that this recognition can inspire other young Malaysians abroad to champion the interests of the Malaysian diaspora no matter where they are in the world.

"Looking ahead, I am eager to explore opportunities to serve on the boards of charities in London, using the youth perspective to positively shape governance and drive meaningful change," he said.
