Shah Alam allocates RM150mil to tackle Setia Alam floods

SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has allocated RM150mil for the Setia Alam Flood Mitigation Plan to address the frequent flash floods in the Setia Alam area since 2021.

State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the project will involve Sungai Binjai and Sungai Puloh to bring relief to more than 200,000 residents in Setia Alam facing frequent flash floods, even outside the monsoon transition seasons.

"Recently, due to climate change, flash floods have been happening more frequently and are difficult to predict,” he said.

"One of the factors might be development, but we cannot blame development and the environment alone; we need to take immediate action,” he told reporters after officiating a public dialogue session for the Setia Alam flood mitigation plan on Wednesday (Feb 5).

Mohd Najwan, who is also Kota Anggerik assemblyman, said the council has identified several high-risk areas involving public utilities and developments that require cooperation from various parties.

He said flash floods usually occur in areas with water retention problems, which are unable to accommodate large volumes of water.

As a solution, the council is considering constructing sustainable drainage and expanding water retention ponds.

"This approach includes elements such as natural water absorption, the preservation of green spaces and the integration of modern technology in water management,” he said. - Bernama
