Sarawak among Malaysia’s top five economic performers in 2024, says Abang Jo

SIBU: Sarawak recorded a strong economic performance in 2024, placing it among the top five states in Malaysia in terms of economic growth, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

"In our exports, Sarawak is also within that plot. Actually, we are number four in terms of exports from Malaysia to our partners. In other words, Sarawak has achieved certain success in our economic performance in 2024," he said.

Speaking at a Chinese New Year gathering organised by the United Chinese Association in Sibu on Saturday (Feb 1) night, Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak had secured RM14.2bil in revenue last year, a milestone that he attributed to the state’s robust economic policies.

"We got RM14.2bil in terms of our revenue and we hope in 2025, more money will come in. This will enhance and strengthen our economy as we focus on the new economy," he said.

He reiterated Sarawak’s commitment to the green economy, particularly in the export of hydrogen.

He revealed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had invited him to join discussions with the Japanese Prime Minister regarding the production of ammonia.

"We are already sending methanol to China, our friends in China, and I think our trade between us and China will continue to expand. Not only that, we are still negotiating the establishment of a medical faculty from Fudan University, where both western and eastern medicine will be taught. The Chinese are very knowledgeable in eastern medicine, and with Sarawak’s rich biodiversity, this can be a platform for us to promote traditional medicine," he added.

Abang Johari also emphasized the importance of economic diversification, which he believed would create more job opportunities for Sarawakians.

"We are also now pursuing efforts to diversify our economy. With this diversification, it will create more jobs, and I must thank the Chinese community for your support in strengthening our human resources," he said.

Sarawak’s push for a green and diversified economy, the Premier said aligns with its long-term vision of sustainable growth, making it a key player in Malaysia’s economic landscape.
