Worker in Penang killed, another in serious condition after exposure to dangerous chemicals

PETALING JAYA: A worker was killed while another is in critical condition after being exposed to dangerous chemicals during fumigation at a factory in Perai, Penang.

The Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) said its investigation officers were rushed to the scene following the Jan 28 accident.

"Initial investigations showed that a total of eight workers were from a contractor company appointed to do fumigation work to kill insects in the factory from Jan 21 to 28," said DOSH in a statement on Facebook on Jan 31.

"It is believed the victim came back to the location with a friend to record the gas readings at one of the factory's premises on Jan 29.

DOSH said both the victims experienced vomiting and shortness of breath and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

"However one died on Jan 30 and another is in critical condition in the intensive care unit, with one of the doctors who treated the victims also experiencing shortness of breath and sore throat after giving CPR assistance.

It said six others who experienced initial symptoms were allowed to return home but were still being monitored.

"The entire fumigation area in the factory has been ordered to be closed and notice has been given to stop the usage of all chemicals, especially dangerous chemicals such as methyl bromide used for fumigation work.

DOSH said the management has also been ordered to carry out an internal investigation to find the source of the incident, rectify the situation and present the findings to the department.

It said legal action under Section 15(1) of the Workers Safety and Health Act 1994 will be taken if there has been any violation of the Act by the company with a maximum fine of RM500,000 imposed if convicted.
