KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sabah and Sarawak has improved, with a decrease in the number of evacuees and the closure of several temporary relief centres as at 8pm Saturday (Feb 1).
In SABAH, the number of flood victims has dropped to 1,485 from 1,702 earlier in the afternoon. The Sabah Disaster Management Committee reported that the Beluran district has fully recovered, leading to the closure of all relief centres in the area by 6pm.
Currently, nine relief centres remain operational across four districts.
"Pitas continues to record the highest number of evacuees, with 819 individuals, followed by Lahad Datu (520), Beaufort (110), and Paitan (36).
"The evacuation trend in Lahad Datu has shown an increase, while numbers in other affected districts remain unchanged,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, in SARAWAK, the number of flood victims has declined to 12,423 from 12,656 earlier in the day.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee reported that the Bintulu division (covering Bintulu, Tatau, and Sebauh districts), which has recorded the highest number of flood victims since the disaster began, saw a slight decrease to 5,672 people from 5,712 previously
"The number of evacuees in the Serian division (Serian, Siburan, and Balai Ringin districts) remains at 2,576, while the Samarahan division (Samarahan, Asajaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan, and Gedong districts) recorded a slight increase to 1,921 people.
"The Sibu division (Sibu, Selangau, and Kanowit districts) also saw an increase to 1,165 evacuees, while numbers in the Miri division (Miri, Subis, and Beluru districts) rose to 1,057 people,” the statement added.
Additionally, the Mukah division (Mukah and Matu districts) recorded a slight rise in evacuees to 32 people.
However, flood conditions in Kuching have fully stabilised, leading to the closure of all three relief centres in the division today. - Bernama
