KUALA LUMPUR: Expertise in social media and communication technologies is vital in the fight against child predators and paedophiles, according to Bukit Aman.

“In cases where we have investigated and traced individuals in possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which equates to paedophile activities, it deeply concerns me. It confirms the existence of individuals drawn to these unnatural acts.

“What worries me even more is that there is a market for such materials. Investigating these cases requires a specialised team with expertise in social media and communication technology,” said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

He made the remarks during a special briefing on Monday (Jan 26).

Comm Mohd Shuhaily highlighted that police operations and surveillance are ongoing. He referenced the recent "Ops Pedo Bersepadu," a joint operation conducted by the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor, and Terengganu on Dec 23, which led to the arrest of 13 individuals.

“These operations are continuous. We do not just wait for reports; we conduct proactive surveillance,” he said.

He also praised the government’s decision to mandate social media platforms to register for service licences, calling it a positive step towards safeguarding children in the digital space.

“Parents and legal guardians must also play their roles when granting social media access to their children,” he added.
