Strategies in place to alleviate traffic congestion during LRT Project, says Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government will implement traffic management strategies to alleviate congestion, especially with significant infrastructure projects like the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project beginning, says Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

"During the LRT construction, the traffic congestion will worsen. We will devise a traffic management plan to ease congestion,” he said after the signing ceremony of a master sale and purchase and development agreement between Penang Development Corporation and Fajarbaru Builder Group on Monday (Jan 20).

He recognised that during long weekends and festive seasons, Penang often faces heavy traffic, causing congestion at many popular spots throughout the state.

Chow was responding to the latest TomTom Traffic Index, which listed George Town as 73rd city with the worst traffic congestion.

The location technology and consumer electronic manufacturer based on average travel times and congestion levels in 500 cities across 62 countries.
