Documentary on TAR UMT received positively, says Dr Mah

IPOH: The documentary film titled “The Story of TARCIANS” has been received positively since it premiered nationwide on Dec 5, says MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

He said that there have been about 55 screenings in theatres across Perak as of January of this year.

"The reception has been very good, not only in Perak but also in other states like Negeri Sembilan.

"The movie is based on facts and highlights a very humble beginning," he said at the screening of The Story of TARCIANS at GSC Ipoh Parade on Thursday (Jan 5).

The movie narrates the tale of TAR UMT, which began as Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) in 1969 to uplift underprivileged students by providing affordable tertiary education.

It was later upgraded to university college status in 2013 and became known as Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC).

In 2022, it was elevated to a full-fledged university and is now known as TAR UMT.

When asked if the movie would boost enrolment, Dr Mah said the film is solely to tell the institution's story.

"This movie is mainly to tell the story of TAR UMT and not for any promotional purpose. It is just to share the story," he said.

Additionally, he stated that the movie provides parents and students with a good understanding of the institution’s origins and growth.

"It shows how the university was born from humble beginnings and grew into what it is today through the support of many," he said.

Dr Mah expressed gratitude to the then-government and the public for their contributions to the university’s establishment and expansion.

Produced by the university and spearheaded by the Alumni Council, The Story of TARCIANS tells a heartwarming story about how three Malaysians obtained tertiary education and the history of this notable local higher education institution.

The film was directed by award-winning director Mark Lee See Teck, will be screened nationwide, in addition to private screenings for TAR UMT staff and students on campus.
