KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Johor is worsening while it has improved in Kelantan.
State disaster management committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the number of flood victims in Johor increased to 52 evacuees from 14 families as at 8am yesterday compared with 26 people from seven families on Monday.
He said all the victims were housed at two temporary relief centres (PPS) in the Kota Tinggi district.
He said Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas housed 13 victims from three families, while SK Gambut accommodated 39 people from 11 families.
“Meanwhile, five rivers are at the alert level in the state, namely Sungai Muar in Kampung Awat; Segamat with a reading of 19.31m; Sungai Kahang in Kampung Contoh, Kluang, with a reading of 13.93m; and Sungai Ulu Sedili Besar in Batu 52 Sedili, Kota Tinggi, with a reading of 8.39m.“Two more rivers are in the Mersing district, namely Sungai Tenglu Kecil in Kampung Tenglu Kecil with a reading of 1.22m and Sungai Paya Dato’ with a reading of 1.35m,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.
In Kelantan, the number of flood victims in the Tanah Merah sub-district decreased to 476 victims from 135 families yesterday, compared with 573 people from 178 families a day earlier.
The Disaster Information Portal of the Social Welfare Department showed that all victims were taking shelter in seven PPS.
In Terengganu, the two remaining PPS were closed yesterday, marking the end of the third wave of floods in the state.
The state disaster management committee secretariat said the PPS at Masjid Kampung La and Dewan Terbuka Kampung Belaoh in Besut were closed at 10am.
It said all 44 victims from 12 families at the two PPS were allowed to return home as floodwaters had receded.
The third wave of floods in Terengganu, which began on Sunday, saw more than 400 victims evacuated to PPS in three affected districts – Hulu Terengganu, Besut and Kemaman.
