Labuan-KK ferry service's restart postponed due to technical issues

KOTA KINABALU: The Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service scheduled to restart on Sunday (Dec 15) has been postponed due to technical requirements.

According to LDA Labuan-Holdings Sdn Bhd (LDAH), the delays for the Labuan-Kota Kinabalu-Labuan services were due certain technical issues which required more time to comply with the safety, maintenance and compliance requirements for passenger ferries.

Apart from the technical requirements, LDAH was also seeking approval for the use of jetty facilities in Sabah, the company said in a statement.

LDAH is the operator of the Labuan International Ferry Terminal and Double Power is the operator of the Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express boat.

The company said that once the issues were ironed, the ferry service would begin.

"We apologise for this delay and will do our best to ensure that Labuan-Kota Kinabalu-Labuan service will start as soon as possible," the company said.

Last week, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the Labuan-Kota Kinabalu ferry service will begin operating again on Dec 15 after it stopped for almost three years following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move to restart the service is seen as an important step to improve links between the duty-free island with Kota Kinabalu.
