Senior citizen claims trial to charge of sexually assaulting grandniece

SEREMBAN: A senior citizen has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of committing physical sexual assault against his 10-year-old grandniece.

The 64-year-old man pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Judge Surita Budin.

The accused allegedly committed the offence at an eatery in Lenggeng around 1.30pm on 21 October.

He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term not exceeding 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi offered the accused bail of RM15,000 pending a remention.

The accused was unrepresented and told the court that he was a divorcee and denied committing the alleged act.

The court decided not to offer bail to the accused and fixed 13 January next year for remention, allowing the accused to appoint a lawyer.
