Floods: Monitor children's movements, don't view situation as water fest, say Kuantan cops

KUANTAN: Residents in flood-prone areas are urged not to underestimate the threat of the disaster and to always prioritise safety and stay alert to weather changes, says Asst Comm Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu.

Given the current unpredictable weather conditions and continuous heavy rain, which can lead to river overflow and potential flooding, the Kuantan OCPD issued a reminder to those living close to rivers.

He stressed that floods are not a water festival nor a time for water merriment, and advised parents to closely monitor their children's movements.

"Small children should not be allowed to play in shallow flood waters due to the high risk of being swept away. For families with elderly or frail members, they should be moved to safer ground without delay.

"The public is reminded to always be alert to flood warnings from the authorities, and to ensure all electrical switches and the main switch are turned off to prevent electric shock incidents," he said in a Facebook post Tuesday (Dec 10).

He also urged residents in affected areas to evacuate promptly to temporary relief centres when instructed, and to ensure their homes are locked and important documents kept in higher places.

ACP Wan Mohd Zahari asked flood victims to contact the relevant authorities if they are trapped in flood situations, providing their location and situation details.

"Kuantan residents can contact the Kuantan IPD (district police headquarters) at 09-565 2089 (hotline) for any inquiries and issues," he added.

Pahang is once again grappling with floods, with four relief centres opened in the Maran district early Wednesday (Dec 10) morning, sheltering 52 victims from 12 families from Kampung Ulu Luit, Kampung Luit, Kampung Bukit Kuin and Kampung Paya Chedong. – Bernama
