Pendang MP gets 10-day suspension for insulting Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional's Pendang MP Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim has been suspended for 10 days for insulting Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

Johari ordered Awang to leave the House immediately after he failed to apologise over his remarks made via TikTok recently despite repeated calls to do so.

"Although I had written a letter to you on July 22 to retract the statement and apologise, till this day YB (Yang Berhormat) has not done anything.

"I had even asked the Dewan Rakyat secretary to meet you and the Chief Whip to speak to you yet YB had done nothing about it.

"In light of YB's failure to apologise to me as Speaker, I order YB to leave the House and (you are) suspended for 10 days," he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Dec 5).

According to Johari, Awang uploaded a TikTok video on July 18 where he disparaged the Speaker as being a tyrant in the august House.

A shouting match ensued between several backbenchers and Opposition MPs soon after Johari's ruling and went on for almost 20 minutes.

Order was restored after Johari stood firm on his decision against Opposition MPs' protests.

"Don't challenge me. I have a temper.

"My decision is final," he said before resuming the proceedings.

Earlier, Awang was asked by Johari to apologise for claiming that RM94mil in cash had been found in the home of a former minister.

Awang made the allegation in the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 4

He was subsequently told by Johari to show proof of his claims which he failed to do.

Awang retracted the claim and apologised for his allegations.
