Floods: Kg Serian's newly upgraded bridge at risk of collapse

GUA MUSANG: A 10m-long steel bridge in Kampung Serian here that was just upgraded a month ago is at risk of collapsing as the ground around its supporting pillars are eroding.

Villager Muhamad Rofi Ismail, 58, said he first noticed the damage nearly a week ago after floodwaters receded and the bridge is now at risk of collapsing as its supporting pillars are no longer stable.

"This bridge is used daily by over 1,000 residents as the main route in and out of the village. We are worried that the erosion will cause the bridge to collapse because it can no longer bear the load.

"This is dangerous for bridge users, especially if further erosion occurs during the next wave of floods," he said when speaking to reporters in Kampung Serian on Thursday (Dec 5).

Echoing similar concerns was Muhammad Faisal Yaakob, 32, who frequently uses the bridge to send his children to school every morning.

He said the bridge is crucial for residents to access the mosque, town, as well as for farmers who use four-wheel-drive vehicles to transport their produce.

"We hope authorities will promptly address the erosion beneath the bridge to prevent any untoward incident," he said.

Meanwhile, Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani confirmed that his office had received complaints from village residents about the bridge.

He called on the authorities to urgently maintain and repair the bridge. – Bernama
