RAUB: Startling cries from the neighbour saved a family in Kampung Lechar here when the village was hit by floods on Sunday (Dec 1).

Housewife, Rabiah Ibrahim, 64, recounted the anxious moments when the water levels rose exceptionally fast, reported Sinar Harian.

"It had been raining since evening and noticed the water levels rising but never expected a flood of this magnitude.

“Looking around the house, there was no water, then suddenly at 3am in the morning, a neighbour called out that the water had risen. It was chaotic trying to pack up what we could," said Rabiah who was evacuated to the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Kampung Lechar here, accommodating 111 victims.

Retired army personnel, Nor Aidi Mohd Yunus, 64, also shared his surprise at the sudden rise in water levels.

"This time the situation was very different because usually the water rises during the day, not at night. Initially, I couldn't believe it when the emergency siren sounded early this morning (Sunday).

"But with a sense of unease, I opened the door to see a lot of water," he said, having lived in the village for the past 15 years.

For Abdul Wahab Che Teh, 72, this flood incident created a chaotic atmosphere as his house was flooded in about half an hour.

"I was also surprised because the number of victims this time was not as many as before," he added.

Meanwhile, the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, visited and contributed donations to the victims at the PPS.

Also present were the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, and Crown Prince of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Ibni Al-Sultan Abdullah.
