KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) have joined forces to advance future technological initiatives in the palm oil industry.
In a statement, MCMC announced that the strategic partnership had successfully addressed longstanding connectivity challenges within oil palm plantations and culminated in the launch of the AgriNXT: Oil Palm Chapter (OPC) initiative.
"The Unveiling AgriNXT: OPC event reaffirmed the strategic collaboration between us and MPOB, which was formalised through the execution of a memorandum of understanding in February last year.
"This was to show both party's commitment to accelerate the adoption of future technologies in the palm oil industry," read the statement issued on Saturday (Nov 16).
The statement went on to explain that one of the key challenges—poor connectivity within plantations due to the dense canopy of oil palm fronds—had been effectively overcome.
The advancements made have enabled seamless communication and data transfer, which is expected to drive innovation and improve productivity within the industry.
"The initiative was a competition aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises and startups that sought to accelerate the development and adoption of advanced technologies for the palm oil industry.
"The problem statements for AgriNXT: OPC were specifically designed by MPOB to test the connectivity solutions under the oil palm canopy," it read.
The winners of the AgriNXT: OPC competition were Myventures Digital Sdn Bhd, Mind Mechatronic Intelligent Design Sdn Bhd, HSS ProPick Technologies Sdn Bhd, Info-Trax Sdn Bhd, and A2tech Sdn Bhd.
Each winner received RM75,000 to further develop their solutions, which included innovations such as machinery reporting automation, AI-based fruit ripeness determination, and the use of drones and teleoperated systems for plantation navigation.
"The winning solutions were presented last year on Nov 28 at the MPOB headquarters during the initiative's competition phase.
"It was subsequently piloted from Aug 5 to 7 this year at MPOB's research station in Kluang, Johor," it said.
The programme allowed for real-world testing and industry expert feedback, further validating the effectiveness of these innovative solutions and the connectivity solution under the oil palm canopy.
"MPOB along with the Mechanisation and Automation Research Consortium of Oil Palm emphasised the necessity of adopting future technologies to overcome industry challenges and maintain global competitiveness.
"The Unveiling AgriNXT: OPC event provided an excellent platform for Malaysian SMEs and startups to showcase their innovative solutions, contributing to the digital transformation of the palm oil industry.
"The event further facilitated networking opportunities and fostered collaborations among stakeholders," it said.
