KUALA LUMPUR: Japan's new ambassador-designate to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, has committed to further enhancing Japan-Malaysia relations, continuing the legacy of his predecessor to advance the long-standing strategic ties between the two nations.
He stressed that people-to-people exchanges are a crucial cornerstone of these bilateral relations, and he is dedicated to expanding cultural, tourism, student, and educational exchanges.
"I am extremely delighted and honoured to work at the forefront to further strengthen the existing friendly cooperation between Japan and this wonderful country, bonded by deep friendship and strong ties built over the years under the Look East Policy," Shikata said, having arrived in Malaysia on Nov 6, in a message posted on the embassy’s website.
Acknowledging Malaysia's significant role as the 2025 Asean chair with a theme of "Inclusiveness and Sustainability," he added, "I am grateful for being given this opportunity to contribute as Ambassador of Japan in Malaysia at such a wonderful timing and will put my best efforts into my new role."
Shikata highlighted his readiness to foster closer relations under the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in December 2023, noting that amid a complex global landscape, Japan and Malaysia's commitment to a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" is increasingly crucial.
He aims to work closely with Malaysian officials through initiatives such as the Official Security Assistance (OSA) and the Strategic Dialogue, which will bolster bilateral cooperation on regional security and international order based on the rule of law.
Shikata also underscored the importance of economic partnerships, highlighting Japan's significant investments and collaborations in energy transition projects like hydrogen and carbon capture, which align with Japan’s Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) initiative.
"We are committed to encouraging more Japanese companies to invest here, as well as to help improve the business environment in Malaysia," he said.
He also expressed a keen interest in engaging with Japanese nationals in Malaysia and visiting every Malaysian state to gather insights and deepen bilateral relations across all areas. – Bernama
