Selangor looking to sports tourism to boost figures

SEPANG: Sports tourism will be included in the Selangor government’s annual calendar next year to boost Visit Selangor Year 2025 themed “Surprising Selangor”, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shari.

He said various sports activities are seen as having the potential to attract more tourists from within and outside the country, to help it meet its target of eight million tourists.

“We are also considering including two events in the calendar, namely cycling and pickleball.

“In addition, for the sports tourism sector, for example, we have two paragliding sites in Jugra and Kuala Kubu Baru,” he told the media after launching the Visit Selangor Year 2025 logo during a visit to the Selangor Tourism pavilion held in conjunction with the Malaysian MotoGP 2024 here yesterday, reported Bernama.

He said last year, Selangor recorded 6.45 million tourists while this year, the target is seven million. In order to achieve the target tourist arrivals to Selangor, Amiruddin said the state government recently examined several plans, particularly in the tourism development programme that will be announced during the tabling of its 2025 budget, which is expected to be held in the middle of this month.

“We have implemented measures including restoring homestays to enable them to operate and increase their income,” he said.

Regarding the Malaysian MotoGP 2024, Amiruddin said 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the last day of the motorcycling event, held over three days since Friday.

“Programmes like these will be made a model on how we want to encourage tourists to visit Selangor. To some extent, this will provide a shift to the state’s tourism sector,” he added.

During the three-day Malaysian MotoGP 2024, Tourism Selangor held various programmes such as extreme tourism, food and local fruit exhibitions.
