Deepavali: 39 fatalities, 3,268 accidents recorded in two days, says Bukit Aman


KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 39 fatalities have been recorded nationwide over two days starting Wednesday (Oct 30) during the Deepavali celebrations.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri reported that 3,268 road accidents occurred during this period.

He explained that on Wednesday, there were 1,882 accidents, including 15 fatal incidents resulting in 16 deaths, while on Thursday (Oct 31), there were 1,386 accidents, with 23 fatal crashes causing 23 deaths.

"The highest number of fatalities involved motorcyclists and pillion riders, totalling 32 individuals. The remainder involved drivers and passengers of other vehicles," he stated when contacted.

Mohd Yusri also urged road users to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition, comply with traffic rules, and demonstrate consideration and tolerance towards others.

"Plan your journey, particularly for long trips. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the latest information from government agencies and highway concessionaires," he advised. – Bernama
