SAR op underway for missing Filipino man in Kudat


KOTA KINABALU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been mounted after a 23-year-old man missing at sea and feared drowned in Kudat waters.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a call on Thursday (Oct 10) at 8.05am from the Kudat police station that the victim, a Filipino, was feared drowned near Balambangan Island when he disappeared after he went to fish since Tuesday (Oct 8).

The Kudat fire station sent a team to the location and the SAR operation also involved other authorities like the marine police and Civil Defence Force.

“The second day of SAR (Oct 11) commenced at 10am and focused on waters around Balambangan Island using marine police boat asset.

“The victim has yet to be found and the operation will be continued on Saturday (Oct 12),” said the department spokesman.

Meanwhile in a separate incident in Tenom on Friday, a 55-year-old motorcyclist met his death in a mishap involving two other vehicles at Jalan Kemabong there.

Authorities received the report at 6.28pm where the victim, Amir Mustafa, was pronounced dead on site after his motorcycle crashed with two cars.

The six personnel members from the Tenom fire station team were sent to the location with proceeded to lift one of the cars, with civilians’ assistance, to retrieve the victim’s body pinned underneath.

“The remains were then handed over to the police for further actions,” said the Department spokesman, adding the operation ended at 7.01pm.
