Court sets Nov 12 to hear Paul Yong's bid to submit fresh evidence in rape case

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court will hear an application brought by former Perak executive councillor Paul Yong on Nov 12 to submit new evidence in an attempt to overturn his conviction for raping his maid.

His lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, when contacted, confirmed that Yong filed the application early this week.

A case management session was held on Friday (Oct 11) before Federal Court deputy registrar Faezahnoor Hassan.

Hisyam also said the hearing of Yong's appeal against his conviction and imprisonment, initially fixed on Oct 23 has been rescheduled to Nov 25.

On March 1 this year, the Court of Appeal, in a split decision, dismissed Yong's appeal and upheld his conviction for the offence.

The appellate court's three-judge panel, however, reduced Yong's prison sentence from 13 years to eight years with two strokes of the cane.

The panel allowed a stay of execution, pending disposal of the appeal at the Federal Court.

Yong was released on RM30,000 bail in one surety and also ordered to surrender his passport to the court.

On July 27, 2022, the Ipoh High Court found Yong guilty of raping a 23-year-old Indonesian maid in a room at his house in Ipoh on July 7, 2019. – Bernama
