Anwar’s ex-aide charged over fake guns

KUALA LUMPUR: A former aide to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with possession of two imitation pistols.

Muhammed Yusoff Rawther (pic), 31, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate S. Mageswary.

The former research assistant was charged with having in his possession the imitation pistols at a roadside near a condominium in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, here at 9.25am on Sept 6.

The charge, under Section 36(1) of the Arms 1960, provides imprisonment for up to one year or a maximum fine of RM5,000 or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman proposed bail at RM20,000 in one surety, reported Bernama.

Lawyer Nurmustanir Md Nor, who represented Muhammed Yusoff, then informed that his client had been charged on Sept 12 in another Magistrate’s Court for a drug offence.

Muhammed Yusoff was charged with trafficking cannabis weighing 305g, punishable with death or life imprisonment if found guilty.

However, no plea was recorded as the drug offence is a serious case under the jurisdiction of the High Court and the accused was not granted bail.

His lawyer later told reporters that Muhammed Yusoff was detained by a group of Kuala Lumpur police officers who allegedly found the guns and drugs in his car.

As the accused is unbailable for the drug case, the court dealing with the imitation firearms case did not grant him bail yesterday and set Nov 12 for mention.
