Three on trial for sexual abuse of underaged teen


KOTA KINABALU: Three men have been charged in the Sandakan Sessions Court for committing sexual acts on a 14-year-old male student.

Two of the suspects pleaded guilty but the third claimed trial when charges were brought before them on Monday.

Sandakan acting district police chief Supt Ramasamy Kuppan said Saharuddin Amirullah, 32, a local resident, pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal to five years’ jail and one stroke of the rotan to charges under Section 377B of the Penal Code for committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature.

The other accused, Ryan Caballero, 34, a Filipino, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for sexually abusing the victim and was sentenced to five years’ jail and given one stroke of the rotan.

Judge Zaini also ordered Caballero to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.

Another local, Mohd Zairi Awang, 29, who pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 377B of the Penal Code, had his case scheduled for mention on Nov 11.
