KUALA KRAI: A 56-year-old woman has been killed while her husband and daughter were injured when their car hit a dead cow and overturned.

The accident took place on Jalan Kota Baru-Gua Musang near here at 6.57am on Friday (Oct 4).

Kuala Krai OCPD Supt Mazlan Mamat said the accident occurred when the car, driven by the victim's husband, failed to avoid a cow carcass lying across the road.

The car skidded into the opposite lane and overturned on the road shoulder.

"The victim, who was in the front passenger seat, died at the scene, trapped in the wreckage until extricated by the Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Department," he said.

"The driver, the victim's husband, sustained chest injuries. Their daughter, who was in the rear seat, suffered leg injuries," he added.

Mazlan stated that a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver lost control while trying to avoid the cow carcass in the middle of the road.

"All the victims were taken to Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital for further treatment, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.

Mazlan noted that eight accident-prone locations, including this area, have been identified in Kuala Krai, with warning signboards erected to remind motorists to adhere to rules and speed limits.

Meanwhile, Shamsuri Mat, the victim's younger brother, said that at the time of the accident, his sister, Norma Mat, was travelling with her husband, Wan Rosli Wan Harun, 61, to send their daughter, Wan Kasma Ayuni, 19, back to the International Islamic University of Malaysia (UIAM) in Gombak after the semester break.

He mentioned that his sister's remains would be buried near Kampung But, Ketereh in Kota Baru on Friday. – Bernama
