Mahkota polls (live updates): BN takes seat, according to unofficial count

KLUANG: Barisan Nasional has retained the Mahkota state seat after emerging as the unofficial winner in a straight fight against Perikatan Nasional.

Barisan candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah clinched the victory when he garnered 18,649 votes against Perikatan’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar’s 4,748, says Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki with more ballots left to be counted.

According to the Election Commission (EC), voter turnout had reached 47.16% as of 4pm.

Vote counting is now in progress at the Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail in Kluang.

The by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional's Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
